Plymouth is a brand of the Chrysler Corporation. The first Plymouth models were introduced in 1928 as entry-level offerings to compete against Ford and Chevrolet’s low-cost equivalents such as the Falcon and Corvair. Of all things, the Plymouth name is derived from a popular household twine called Plymouth Binder Twine. Go figure.

Ultimately, the brand would find itself in a bind of its own and the brand was discontinued by Chrysler in June 2001. Prior to its demise, Plymouth released an appealing and hot-selling model called the Valiant to represent its entry into the compact-car arena. The Valiant was offered from 1960-1976 and available in 4-door, 2-door, wagon, and convertible formats. It had broad appeal and was sold in global markets.

Specifically, the 1963 model year set a global sales record and it is understandable considering its overall good looks combined with an economical price point. This was a car that offered the fiscally challenged a stylish way to get about town.

On offer is a cheap way to get into the classic car scene on a budget. It was used as the seller’s daily driver for ten years and is ready to be passed on to the next appreciative owner. If you are looking for some top-down fun and watching your pennies, take a look at this badboy on Hemmings, currently list at $6,800.

Entry level classic. Love cars of the 60s, but you’re not a cyber-millionaire or professional athlete?

Sturdy, dependable Valiant has been my summertime daily driver for ten years. It’s 170 cu. in. Slant-6 is the Energizer Bunny of engines. Push-button TorqueFlight automatic transmission still as good as new.

The Valiant runs all through the warmer months, then is lovingly tucked away after a final top-down drive through peak fall colors. It has all the quirks and charm of a 50 year-old vehicle, but it will always get where you need to go.

Enjoy as is, or modify to your heart’s desire.
