There is an old adage in racing that you can achieve speed through lightness. In this case, Porsche took this to heart in 1967 and built its first ever purpose-built 911-based race car called the 911R. This car was never homologated so it raced in the competitive prototype class.

Only 22 total units were ever produced. Three are owned by Porsche and the rest were sold to privateer racers, which makes this a rare bird indeed. Porsche put its road-going 911S on the equivalent of an extreme Slimfast diet and installed new fiberglass panels (fenders, front/rear deck lids, and bumpers), thinner-gauge steel, plexiglass side and rear windows, and an interior stripped of all creature comforts that netted a total weight loss of 450 lbs!

With a 906-based race engine putting out 210 hp, the 911R had a weight-to-power ratio of 8.9 lbs-1 hp compared to a relatively portly 14.4 lbs for each horsepower for the standard 911S. This large disparity allowed the 911R to rumble around a racetrack with amazing speed and alacrity, and it went on to earn victories in such notable races as the Marathon de la Route at the Nurburgring, Tour de France, and the Corsica Rally in Italy.

Since getting your hands on an authentic 911R is pretty much impossible, the next best thing is to find a tribute car, such as the one on offer in our featured car. It is based off a 1967 no-rust, no-accident California chassis and completely resto-modded to be a near copy of the original. It comes with a newly built 2.8L twin-plug engine with an aluminum case, new JE forged pistons, port and polished headers, and modified Weber carbs. This badboy can walk the talk. It’s all finished off with new interior, Fuchs wheels, suspension, exhaust, and an understated yet classic light ivory exterior over black interior. It can be yours for a fraction of the cost of an original for $75,000 Buy it now price on Ebay.
