The 550 Spyder was Porsche’s first car designed and intended specifically for racing, inspired by the 356 Spyder. Introduced at the 1953 Paris Motor Show, the 550 would go on to compete in international races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, La Carrera Panamericana, and the Targa Florio, where it gave Porsche its first overall win in a major race in 1956.

For a purpose-built race car, the 550 proved quite formidable with its lightweight chassis, low center of gravity, and keen handling courtesy of its mid-engine layout. Porsche would later do a limited production run of 90 units for its customers, one of which would land into the hands of James Dean, who infamously died in a car crash in his 550 in 1955.

With a wicked combination of sports-car good looks, power, handling, and trademark Porsche solidity, the 550 will always be one of Porsche’s greatest cars ever produced. This is demonstrated in the collector market where rare original examples are sold for almost $4 million today.
