It’s too bad Citroën never partnered with Steppenwolf in 1968 when they released their hit song Magic Carpet Ride. It would have been quite apropos, as they would say in the Fronsh. You see, from 1955-1975, Citroen produced the innovative DS series. It was a sleek, futuristic, and technology-laden car with power front-disc brakes, adaptive headlights, and a snazzy hydro-pneumatic self-leveling suspension system that offered terrific handling and the cushy sensation of riding the proverbial magic carpet. As one might say after sipping a nice single-malt Scotch, it was smoooth. The DS was designed by Flaminio Bertoni and the French aeronautical engineer André Lefèbvre, who apparently were ahead of their time and knew what they were doing with the DS. It has been called one of the most beautiful cars by Classic & Sports Car magazine and one of the top 100 Coolest Cars by Automobile Magazine. Interestingly, the name is a French play on words as the pronunciation (déesse) means goddess. For the time, the DS was diety-like and sold over 1.5 million units globally during its production run. Unfortunately, like many things of French origin (with exception of perhaps the cuisine), it did not take well in the American market and only sold about 38,000 units from 1956-1972. Which is unfortunate as the DS provides a world-class ride, unique good looks, and increasing collectibility. One such car is this 1972 Vert Argente (silver green) DS 21. With only 5,600 on a fresh engine rebuild, new AC, new suspension spheres, and various other items, this DS is ready for thousands of miles of enjoyment for its new owner. Understandably, this is a reluctant sale due to relocation and it can be found on Hemmings for $25,000.

Transmission: 4-speed Citromatic semi-automatic

Car purchased in So. San Francisco. Drove it to Phoenix, Arizona in January of 2011. Eventually required engine work; new head, valves etc, pistons and sleeves. Has 5,600 miiles on new engine. It has A/C, new rotary compressor, great for Arizona, four new spheres, electronic ignition, new radiator fan, large radiator that does not over heat, new battery, hydraulic pump replaced when I bought it, proper air duct citroen tubes in front fenders, original radio AM/FM and electric antenna which works, extra line for charging GPS and MP3 players with pioneer speakers and amp. New windshield, clear tinting on windows for best heat and sun block in AZ. Windows are the original green tint from factory.
This is a Citromatic, shifts fine and breaks are very good. Repair work done by Wally Eschrich, Grand Central Citroen, Redlands CA. Simply an excellent professional job. This Cirtroen DS has a long life and great future ahead.
Selling is a heartbreak, however, I’m moving to Hawaii and do not want to ship this car nor expose it to the sea air, nor be far from reliable mechanics.
