Simplicity is the name of the game and hallmark of the Volkswagen Beetle. It was this philosophy that helped drive sales to over 21 million units from 1938-2003, making it the longest-running and most prolific single model production car in the world. In fact, it was simply marketed as the “Volkswagen” initially with no model name, and known internally as the Type 1. One model, one chassis, simple, clean design, and purity in purpose of providing inexpensive and efficient transportation were the calling cards of the Beetle and helped propel it to mass appeal. Originally commissioned by Adolf Hitler and designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche as a people’s car, VW only made about 600 units before WWII intervened and halted production. At the time, many were used for propaganda purposes, called KdF-Wagens for “Kraft durch Freude,” which means strength through joy. Thankfully that moniker didn’t stick and it is now known by the more popular and well-known name, which is derived from the German word “Käfer,” meaning beetle.
The majority of production of the model did not take place until 1945 and Volkswagen would continue to make and sell millions with over 78,000 modifications made over the lifespan of the model. Yet despite the numerous changes, at its core the Beetle would always remain iconic, instantly recognizable, and perhaps the most successful mainstream road car of all time. In the 70s and 80s in Southern California, the Beetle was all the rage and spawned a sub-culture of California Beetles that were highly modified with Fuchs wheels, ragtop sliding sunroofs, Hurst shifters, lowered suspensions, and hopped-up engines. Our featured vehicle is a desirable 1957 Oval-window ragtop and seemingly was inspired by this movement. It benefits from a complete restoration aesthetically and mechanically, sporting new classic non-metallic blue paint over a new cloth interior. It is a turn-key car and ready for some sun-drenched cruising. This cool-looking Beetle can be yours for $17,500 OBO and is listed on TheSamba.
