It is not commonly known that Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. originally began as a French company named Alexandre Darracq. It was not until 1910 that the Chairman of Darracq (an Italian), along with other Italian co-investors, decided to found a new company and brand called A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) due to slow sales of the Darracq brand. It wasn’t until 1920 that A.L.F.A. adopted the name we know today, courtesy of Nicola Romeo, an Italian entrepreneur and Chairman at the time who help the company come out of post-war hardship. Alfa Romeo is steeped in motorsport racing heritage since 1911 and is best known for designing and building high-end sports cars. Perhaps one of the most beautiful of its era was the Giulia Sprint Speciale (SS), a front-engine rear-wheel drive sports car produced from 1959-1966. It replaced the Giulietta (little Giulia) and the name was some deft wordplay on the part of Alfa Romeo to signify that their little girl had grown up to be a woman. With a 1.6 inline 4-cylinder producing 100 hp, the Giulia SS was capable of 120 MPH and was equipped with disc brakes up front to help slow it down. What makes the Giulia distinctive are its smooth curved fenders, classic round headlights, thin pillars, and a wrap-around rear window straight out of a 60’s sci-fi movie. With a drag coefficient of only 0.28, the Sprint Speciale was like Sophia Loren in a one-piece swimsuit…sleek, curvy, and sexy.
On offer is a beautiful dark blue over red leather interior example with only 50,000 miles on the clock. It appears to be in immaculate condition with a showroom finish. This is a private-party sale and apparently, the owner (Kirk White) prefers to let the pictures speak for themselves and only offers a two-word description of the car: “Simply Outstanding.” Well, yes it is, Kirk. Hop on over to Kirk’s site to check out more pictures of this Italian looker, as well as some other interesting items he has available. It’s currently offered for a cool $145,000.
