With summer well on its way, you can’t help but want to enjoy the great weather this season brings, including tooling around in a classic roadster. An oft-overlooked convertible from a defunct brand name is the Datsun Sports model available from 1959-1970. It was known as the Fairlady in the Japanese Domestic Market, but thankfully in the US, it had a more manly and acceptable name of Sports, which was probably good for an extra 5 hp alone. The Sports was the spiritual predecessor to Nissan‘s line of sports cars to come such as the Z cars and was meant to compete with the MG, Triumph, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo equivalents. The Sports provided inexpensive topless driving, attractive packaging, with a little fun factor thrown in. The 1600 variant available between 1965-1970 included a 1.6 inline 4-cylinder mated to a 4-speed manual and produced 95 hp…just enough for a little get up and go without being impaled by an incoming bug at highway speeds. The Sports offered the right blend of fun driving dynamics, good looks, and Japanese reliability that could not necessarily be said coming from its European competitors. This particular Sports 1600 comes off a fresh bare-metal restoration and has thoroughly been rebuilt from the ground up. Every part, bit, panel, and surface has benefited from repair/replacement to produce this Sora Blue over black interior example that looks like it just rolled off the show room. With over $40K invested in the resto, it probably drives almost as new and definitely looks the part as well. Less expensive Datsun Sports can be had, but few are as turn-key and well done as this one. It is currently available on Ebay with a bid of $14,000 and a Buy-it-now price of $22,000.

Up for auction is a 1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster, Sora Blue with Black Interior. This car is a complete Frame off Restoration, It has 312 miles since it was finished.   All work has been done by a professional restoration shop. It has well over 1500 hours of work that was done to bring it back to this like new condition. This car has had well over 40,000.00 dollars invested in it with parts and labor.  This is a great opportunity to buy a complete restoration at a great price. The following work was done to the vehicle:

Frame:
Frame: The body was lifted off the frame, all suspension components were removed, rear leaf springs, upper and lower a-arms, idler box, steering box. The bare frame was stripped. All broken bolts on frame were then removed using a ball burr and then re-threaded. and then the frame was powder-coated black.  All threaded holes were chased and lubricated after powder-coating.    The frame was then reassembled with all new hardware. New frame mounts, new rubber and padding installed on frame prior to reattaching body.

Suspension:
Front: Upper and lower a-arms were disassembled, powder-coated and reassembled. Many new OEM parts installed.  New ball joints were installed. New aftermarket comp springs with isolators, new aftermarket comp bump stop, new comp sway bar with new bushings, seals.  All new urethane boots were installed to tie rods, new dust cover to idler arm.  Brand new KYB Gas-A-Just shocks.  New Koyo OEM bearings to front spindle inner and outer, new grease seals, new wheel studs, new  zerk fittings, new Hardware.  All items torque to specifications.

Rear:  Leaf springs removed,  leaf springs were disassembled, new bushings installed, Leaf springs were painted  and reassembled. New U Bolts installed along with new hardware. New KYB Gas-A-Just shocks installed, New rear suspension bump stops.

Engine:
Fuel System: New Metal Fuel lines, New Fuel hose, the following  NOS OEM parts,  Fuel pump NOS mechanical, Fuel filter assembly NOS. The gas tanks was dipped and resealed and painted.  New gas tank straps, filler hose and overflow hose. The Carbs were disassembled and then were tumbled. The inner domes were polished and the pistons were drop matched. Carbs were reassembled using a new Carb kit with OEM parts, needles were centered, adjusted for height per factory spec, fuel float adjusted. After engine start the  carbs were balanced with Uni-Syn tool.  New Gaskets, spacers on intake, new choke cables. All new hardware installed.  New ITG  performance air filter. New throttle return springs, new heat shield

Engine:  Disassembled and crankshaft was balanced, Cylinders were bored .040 over, new pistons, new engine rod bearings, new engine main bearings, new camshaft jack bearings, new Rod bolt set, new timing set including gears, chains and tensioner, New Gasket set, New Seals, new oil pump,  New Lifters. New distributor housing oil line. Short block was completely rebuilt. New engine mounts. All new hardware used on rebuild.  Throttle cable new, rebuilt choke cable assembly.  Valve cover polished and painted. Intake manifold tumbled.

Cylinder Head:  This was completely disassembled, the following was done. New OEM Intake and Exhaust Valves, new OEM guides, New OEM springs, new OEM valve stemseals, New seats, New ARP Heat treated head stud kit, new OEM head gasket.  Head was rebuilt and installed, Rebuilt rocker and roller assembly, New water tower

Cooling:  New thermostat 180 degree, new water pump, Rebuilt radiator, 4 row high efficiency core, NOS OEM heater core, heater control box disassembled and rebuilt, fan/ blower motor disassembled, replated and rebuilt.  New defroster hoses, new rubber defroster duct, new heater control valve, new grommets, New upper and lower radiator hoses, restored coolant overflow, new overflow cap, new radiator tower cap,  new radiator brackets,

Exhaust: New stainless steel Header, NOS OEM megaphone exhaust with OEM Nissan Muffler, new braided stainless steel Manifold to exhaust pipe coupler, new exhaust tubing and NOS OEM brackets.

Hydraulics:
Hydraulics:  New clutch Master cylinder, new clutch stainless steel line, new clutch hose, new clutch slave cylinder, new clutch tension spring.  NOS OEM Brake Master, new stainless steel brake lines throughout front and rear, new brake hoses, new pistons,  new pads, new shoes. New rotors New rear wheel cylinders.  Pedal assemblies were disassembled and painted and reinstalled, new rubber pedal pads. New Clutch disc, throwout bearing and pressure plate.

Drivetrain:
Rear Differential and Axle:  Disassembled and the following NOS OEM parts were replaced, Pinion Bearing, Pinion Seal, Grease catchers, Rear Axle Collars, Oil Seals, Rear differential gasket, rear axle bearings Koyo OEM NOS.  The following new parts were installed, New wheel studs. New U Joint, driveshaft was balanced and painted.

Transmission: Disassembled, cleaned, painted and Rebuilt with the following: New bearings, New front and rear seals, New gasket kit, New synchros. All gears inspected. New countershaft and countershaft bearings installed. New Delrin shift bushings, new Stainless steel shortened shifter, new shift knob. New transmission mount, new clutch arm boot. New Speedometer cable and new breather cap.

Electrical:
Ignition:  New Mitsubishi Gear reduction starter, new Gary Boone Electronic Ignition Distributor, New Spark Plugs, new Ignition wire set, New coil, new battery, new battery cables, new alternator.

Electrical: All electrical switches and wiring looms were bench tested outside of the car. All repairs were made using correct color coded wire and original OEM Faston connectors as well as F Crimp female and male terminals. All crimps made with factory F-Crimp tools to match OEM manufacturing method. New H4 Headlights installed. Turn signal switch disassembled, cleaned, reassembled, lubricated, tested and installed. All lights were tested, all electrical components are in working condition. The wiring loom was rewrapped and reinstalled.

Lighting:  New light assemblies to rear and front marker signals. New reverse lamp, new headlamps, new license plate light.

Modern CD Player installed to Custom Manufactured metal center console.  Center console retained climate controls and accessory items.

Chrome and Plated Parts:
Chrome: All chrome items on vehicle were triple chrome plated. All Chrome was dipped, cleaned, all rust treated, all removed chrome parts were chromed to show quality with Brass, Nickel and Chrome. Chromed items, list not complete includes bumpers, overriders, headlight scoops, trim rings, dash trim ring, horn button, windshield frame, front grill, new door handles, restored side trim, new inner door handles, new window cranks Soft top clamps. All emergency brake hardware was chromed and replated.

Plated parts:  All door parts were removed, cad plated and reinstalled, new aluminum CNC window limiters,  Re-plated all latches trunk and hood.  Door locks re-keyed.  Top hardware parts replated and reinstalled with all new stainless steel hardware.

Interior:
Interior: This was completely gutted, New Sound deadening material, New horse hair pad, carpet kit, New Firewall Cardboard kit, glove box insert, New interior trim vinyl kit, new dash, center console restored, new glove box. Dash done in a wood grain pattern, glove box and shift plate left to match paint for contrast.  New door panels, new kick panels with new clips. Custom Stereo console with relocated choke cable and cigarette lighter. Mazda Miata seats with custom speakers.  New Escutcheons for door and window cranks.  Custom stereo box, no sheet metal was cut in installing stereo. All interior items were reupholstered.  All items are complete, no missing items

Convertible top:  Top frame powdercoated black, lubricated, front bow stripped and repainted. Front bow latches were triple chrome plated as above.  All new Twists and Posts to body and dash. New Stayfast softtop and new stayfast boot. Both boot and top with all new hardware.

Engine compartment miscellaneous:  Washer bottle complete, no cracks, all new decals, new paint code sticker radiator decal.

Body:
Bare metal restoration, body was stripped and completely disassembled.  Body work completed by professional Body Shop.  The vehicle was taken to bare metal top to bottom.  This has always been a California so rust issues were minimal. Car was painted inside and out.   Car was sealed,  painted and undercoated  underneath prior to painting. Engine compartment, Trunk and inner body tub all painted with vehicle. Painted with doors, hood, and Deck Lids, Yes 2 of them off of the car.  This car has an additional deck lid painted body color complete with chrome that has a Luggage rack on it.

Wheels and Tires:
Restored Libre Mags, These were dealer option mags when the car was new, these were stripped, powdercoated and polished. New tires.
